The 57XX class pannier tanks were the most numerous class of Great Western engine, totalling over 1,000. 5764 was built in Swindon in 1929. It spent its working life in the London area being based at Old Oak Common. In 1960, 5764 was sent to Wolverhampton for overhaul and when it returned, was sold and repainted into London Transport Executive livery, numbered L95.
During 1970, The SVRA
Kidderminster Branch decided that a 57XX pannier would make an interesting
addition to the growing SVR fleet and decided to bid for one of the three 57XX
engines left in LTE service. Their bid was successful and the engine was moved
to Bridgnorth in 1971 and used in LTE livery for that season, returning to its
GWR livery one year later. Since then 5764 has been a most popular and useful
engine on the SVR being more than capable of handling seven coaches.
