Individual Loco Details
ex  USATC S160 2-8-0  No. 5197

This locomotive arrived at the railway early in 2001. Whilst substantially a working locomotive it soon became apparent that levels of repairs in China differ quite greatly from levels in the UK.

The boiler had been extensively refurbished in China, and in fairness to them it had been done to quite a high standard. The boiler underwent extensive NDT inspections at Llangollen to bring all the paperwork in line with British practice. It was re-tubed and granted its boiler certificate. Not long after this it was sold and moved to the CVR.

The locomotive settled down to running on the CVR, before visiting Peak Rail and the Great Central Railway. During its stay at Loughborough it developed leaking tubes. These were expanded whilst at the GCR however upon its return from the GCR we continued to suffer from leaking tubes. Not long after this it was decided that the locomotive now some 5 years into its ticket should have all the smoke tubes renewed. When it was stopped for this repair, other repairs were also planned. Like most jobs on steam locomotives one job led to another, and eventually the locomotive went from having smoke tubes renewed to having new tyres also ! Below you will find a selection of pictures which show the work undertaken on the locomotive.

At the time Cheddleton was not kitted up to lift a locomotive, therefore the work involving the wheels was contracted out to Ian Riley where the locomotive spent some months waiting for its new tyres.

Side on shot showing our rather thin tyres !
Two picture showings the first bits of new steel going in at long last. The green bits form part of the cab floor support. When we lifted the floor over half the support was not there.

The renewed back cab support. On this type of loco these plates flex to allow expansion of the boiler.
The first part of the new brake system has been fitted. It would be some months before we could actually get air to the M8.

The loco arrived at Bury and was quickly prepared for lifting. Here are various shots showing the operation.
Here you can see just how skeletal bar frames are.

Within a couple of hours the loco was back on the ground.
A little out of sequence this shows the extent of leaking tubes, and the primary reasons for initially stopping the loco.
