Churnet Valley Railway MPD

Our MPD is probably one of the smaller such departments in preservation. We currently have 7 steam drivers, 10 fireman, 7 cleaners, 8 diesel drivers (of which 5 are steam drivers also) and 4 DMU drivers. Between us we provide crews for approximately 130 steaming days a year as well as provide shunt crews, and a multitude of diesel crews to cover stock movement between our Workshop / Yard and our storage sidings at Oakamoor

Over the last five years we have developed a much stronger engineering base than was previously established at Cheddleton. Our major drawback was the lack of 3 phase power. We have resolved this by installing a robust generator which provides us with all the power required to drive our machines, but unfortunately at this time not the bulk of the Swindon Machinery.

If you look at the latest news pages, you can see the projects we are currently working on, and in the archive projects pages you can see projects we have worked on. With the exception of 2 paid staff who are employed privately and not funded by the railway, all the staff are volunteers

Unlike some other railways the MPD does not just stick to locomotives. We have overhauled and assist in maintaining the railways Dining Car, and are currently involved in the comprehensive overhaul of a Mark 2 BSO which will become our Bar Car when completed. We usually get involved in brake testing and bogie work for the Carriage & Wagon department, but can also be found out and about tree cutting, assisting the P-Way, as well as more engineering based work such as the construction of the new Cheddleton Bracket Signal, or the installation of the week killing equipment onto a brake van. Donations are always welcome none more that our 12/14 T Coles Road Crane. Unfortunately it was not in the best of condition when delivered, we therefore undertook a comprehensive rebuild. It is now in regular use in and around our yard.

The MPD can be contacted either by email or phone on 01538 361298.
