The Churnet Valley Railway is a preserved heritage railway that operates along the valley floor interweaving with both the River Churnet and Cauldon Canal through what is known locally as Staffordshire's Little Switzerland.
We have been operating trains since 24th August 1996, and since this very first day we have slowly expanded into a 5½-mile railway with three beautifully restored stations and further plans for expansions into Leek.
None of this though would have ever been achieved without the efforts and enthusiasm of our volunteers. Everybody will have heard the old saying “never volunteer”; however volunteering can bring a fresh and new interest to your life, regardless of age, sex or ability. Are you looking for something rewarding to do in your spare time? Do you enjoy meeting new people? Do you want to learn new skills? Then come and get involved helping to keep one of North Staffordshire’s premier attractions running, whilst having a great time yourself as the next member of our volunteer family! With hours to suit your own lifestyle, putting as little or as much time in as you want to can make the biggest of differences.
You don’t need to know anything about railways, as full training and lots of encouragement will be given along the way. Whatever your skills-base and experience, whether you’re working, retired or studying, there’s something for you at the Churnet Valley Railway. However there is more to volunteering than simply driving trains, and we hope the information within this website will give you an insight into what it really takes to run a basic train service on our railway.
There is more than one reason to volunteer, with everyone identifying their own personal goals to achieve. These can include some of the following:
The CVR offers a unique opportunity to travel back in time, and bring the memories of a lost era back to life for countless people. Whatever your reason for wishing to join us, come and be a part of this special little place.
