Educational Days 2017

A school visit to the Churnet Valley Railway provides a valuable educational experience that can be linked to the needs of the curriculum. 


The Evacuee Experience

Mondays 13th / 27th March 2017,

Mondays 22nd May, 

Tuesdays 6th / 13th / 20th June,

Mondays 18th / 25th September, 

Mondays 9th / 16th October,

Suitable for Key Stages 2 & 3 studying World War II :

EXPERIENCE an Evacuee ‘Auction’ and a 10 mile round train trip hauled by a heritage locomotive.

LISTEN to the story of Dorothy who lived in the station house throughout the war.

USE your ID Cards and Ration Books (supplied by the railway).

LEARN about Rationing and taste wartime recipes.

TRAIN to be a member of The Royal Observer Corps.

DECIDE what to pack in your tiny suitcase and handle artefacts from the period.

EXPERIENCE the ‘Blackout’ through the tunnel with the Air Raid Siren and the ‘All Clear’.

TALK and LISTEN to either wartime veterans or ‘real life’ evacuees.

Schools should encourage their pupils to dress suitably where possible for the day’s activities.

Activities spread between the Railway's stations

Evacuee Day £8.00 per pupil 
(which includes £1.00 fee for the Ration Book)
with one adult free for 10 paying pupils.


Adventure Days

Suitable for Reception and all Key Stage 1 children.

Discover the country railway with a journey through the beautiful Churnet Valley onour heritage scenic cruiser train.

SPOT the birds, animals, river, canal and other shapes to be seen on the scenic route through the valley.

MEET and TALK to the railway people, the Driver, the Guard, the Station Master, Signalman and the Porter.

SAY HELLO to the Blacksmith at his forge.

HANDLE objects from the railway and decide what they were used for.

LEARN about the family who lived at the station.

MEET the owls.

TAKE PART in a Bug Hunt and learn about the insects, plants and trees around the station.

PLAY ‘I Spy’ using the buildings and railway furniture on a country railway station.

‘BUY’ your tickets for the journey (Money provided).

On all these experiences a return journey along the unique Churnet Valley is included, as will be relevant work materials. In addition Wednesdays in July are other possible dates in the summer term when parties can be accommodated. It would also be possible to tailor-make a day visit for a school or group of schools at other times of the year.

Adventure Day £7.00 per pupil 

with one adult free for 10 paying pupils.



All Education Days will start from Kingsley and Froghall Station at 10am and finish there at 2.30pm.

*Note; In June and July, the Railway operates a public running day on Wednesdays for which Schools and Youth Clubs are welcome to book a group visit for either a nature ramble, a day out with picnic or to follow a curriculum topic such as Victorian Transport. Our Education team can help plan your visit and if needed act as guides. Please contact our Office for further information.

All activities listed subject to availability on the day.  Please note that all educational days last approximately 5 hours, commencing between 09:30 - 10:00 and finishing no later than 14:30.

We suggest that all children bring a packed lunch with them. Our Education Officer is an experienced teacher who has taken early retirement, the Churnet Valley Railway can offer schools the opportunity to enhance classroom-based lessons by engaging in a Living History Day or, if there are sufficient children, to tailor-make a full day’s experience of the school’s own choosing.

The Education Officer can be contacted for advice and is available to visit your school if requested. Complementary tickets are available for two adults to make a preliminary visit to the railway, please ask for details.
